You've invested in a good serum. You're applying it every day. But your skin looks exactly the same as it did three months ago. The problem likely isn't the serum — it's how you're using it.
Mistake 1 — Wrong application order
The golden rule: apply products thinnest to thickest, most water-based to most oil-based. Serums go after cleansing and toning, before moisturiser and SPF. If you're applying serum over a thick moisturiser, the moisturiser creates a physical barrier that prevents absorption.
Mistake 2 — Applying to dry skin
Many serums (especially those with hyaluronic acid) work by binding to water. If your skin is completely dry when you apply them, they have nothing to work with. Apply serum to slightly damp skin — either right after rinsing (pat to damp, not soaking) or after a hydrating toner.
Mistake 3 — Not giving it enough time
Most active serums (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs) take 8-12 weeks to show results. Niacinamide typically shows pore-minimising effects in 4-8 weeks. If you're switching serums every 3-4 weeks because you're not seeing results, you're not giving any of them a fair trial.
Mistake 4 — Using too many at once
More products doesn't mean better skin. Layering 4-5 serums every morning creates formulation conflicts, potential irritation, and makes it impossible to know what's working. Start with one serum, use it consistently for 8 weeks, then evaluate.
- 1Apply serum after cleansing, before moisturiser
- 2Apply to slightly damp skin
- 3Wait 30-60 seconds before the next product
- 4Give each serum 8-12 weeks before judging
- 5Use one active serum at a time until you know how your skin responds
