The irony of oily skin: the more aggressively you try to control oil, the more your skin produces. Over-washing, skipping moisturiser, and using harsh toners all send your sebaceous glands into overdrive. The fix is gentler than you think.
Step 1 — Gentle Foaming Cleanser
Use a mild, pH-balanced foaming cleanser twice daily (morning and night). CeraVe Foaming Cleanser and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel are both excellent for oily skin. They remove excess sebum without stripping your moisture barrier.
Step 2 — Lightweight Gel Moisturiser
This is the step most people with oily skin skip — and it's a mistake. When your skin thinks it's dehydrated, it produces more oil to compensate. A gel moisturiser (like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel) provides hydration without clogging pores or adding shine.
Step 3 — SPF (skin-finish matters here)
For oily skin, a mattifying SPF makes all the difference. Look for mineral SPFs (titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) or hybrid formulas that control shine. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Dry Touch SPF 50+ is a cult favourite for exactly this reason.
- 1Cleanser twice daily (morning + evening)
- 2Gel moisturiser every morning and evening
- 3SPF every morning without exception
- 4Add a niacinamide serum (optional) between moisturiser and SPF for extra sebum control
